As someone who was born and raised in NYC, I'm a firm believer that you can find and do EVERYTHING in this city - even outdoorsy things like surfing, climbing, hiking, and, yes, even kitesurfing! While my journey into the world of kitesurfing began on the distant shores of foreign lands, I luckily found a wonderful and extremely active kite community in New York that exposed me to some magical spots a quick drive away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Knee-deep bays miles long, combined with flat waters and thermal winds from the ocean make it perfect for beginners in NYC to learn. There are places 40 minutes to an hour from Brooklyn or Manhattan by car, and some you can even get to by train. Below are some of my favorite kitesurfing spots in New York and the tri-state area.

If you have any questions, be sure to join the NYC Kiteboarders Facebook Group and/or connect with Joris Kite to get added to the NYC Kiteboarding Whatsapp group, where people plan sessions and drinks on an almost daily basis! You can pretty much kite all year round in NYC, though Spring and early Fall are the most consistent and don't require a thick wetsuit, though you'll find a load of kooks kiting in the winter - though I prefer flying to Caribbean at that time (spoiled!) Be sure to check your favorite windy app before heading out to the beach!

New York

Plumb Beach, New York

My first revelation occurred at Plumb Beach, a hidden urban oasis nestled along the shores of Jamaica Bay. The shallow waters and consistent winds make it an ideal spot for kitesurfers of all levels. It's not the prettiest place, but it is an, extremely convenient spot for NYC kiteboarders, as you can even take the train there. Best winds are E, SE, S, SW.

Gilgo / Tobay Beach, Long Island, NY

The South Shore of Long Island boasts two remarkable kitesurfing spots – Gilgo Beach and Tobay Beach. These locations offer a perfect blend of serenity and challenging conditions. Not for beginners, Gilgo's consistent waves and Tobay's open waters make them favorite spots for riders seeking a dynamic kitesurfing experience. Best winds are NE, E, SE, S, SW, W

Long Beach, Long Island, NY

Long Beach, with its long sandy stretches and consistent winds, emerged as a comprehensive kitesurfing haven. Beginners find solace in the shallow waters near the shore, while experienced riders venture further into the Atlantic, adding a layer of diversity to the kitesurfing community. Best winds are SE, S, SW

Montauk, Long Island, NY

Known as "The End" of Long Island, Montauk became my go-to spot for an adrenaline rush. Ditch Plains Beach, with its challenging surf and stunning vistas, offers experienced kitesurfers a thrilling playground against the backdrop of the Atlantic's endless horizon. Best winds are SE, S, SW

Great Kills Park, Staten Island, NY

Turning our attention to Staten Island, Great Kills Park emerged as a coastal haven for kitesurfing. The park's marina and expansive waterfront areas offered a tranquil setting, making it a hidden gem within the city's landscape. Best winds are SE, S, SW

Napeague Harbor, Long Island, NY

Venturing to the South Fork of Long Island, Napeague Harbor became my hidden gem for kitesurfing. The protected waters and scenic surroundings provided a tranquil setting for a unique kitesurfing experience away from the bustling crowds. Best winds are S, SW

New Jersey

Sandy Hook, New Jersey

Venturing across the bay to Sandy Hook, part of the Gateway National Recreation Area, unveiled a kitesurfing destination where expansive beaches, dunes, and consistent sea breezes make it one of the best places to kite in the USA, in my humble opinion! This is a beautiful spot and it works well when the wind blows from North or South. You have some good wave riding, as well as some flat shallow water on the western shore. Most of the time you should launch from parking lot B, on the Sandy Hook Bay side.  Best winds are N, S, SW

Connecticut

Calf Pasture Beach, Connecticut

On the Connecticut side of the tristate area, Calf Pasture Beach emerged as a family-friendly kitesurfing destination. Its wide sandy shore, consistent winds, and nearby amenities make it an ideal spot for riders of all levels to enjoy a day on the water. Best winds are S, SW

Jordan Cove, Connecticut

Exploring further into Connecticut, Jordan Cove captured my attention with its mystic charm. The sheltered cove and steady winds created a perfect environment for kitesurfers looking for a serene escape and a different perspective of the coastal beauty. Best winds are S, SW

BONUS: Cape Cod, Massachusetts

While not within the tristate area, Cape Cod's allure is worth the scenic drive for kitesurfing enthusiasts. Kalmus Beach and Wellfleet, with their shallow waters and strong winds, provide a unique kitesurfing experience against the picturesque backdrop of Cape Cod's natural beauty. Best winds are S, SW
